Title
A name given to the resource
British Anarchism, 1960-1968
Description
An account of the resource
Ephemera, posters, and periodicals produced by the British anarchist movement in the 1960s. This collection includes copies of Freedom and Anarchy. Both publications were published by Freedom Press, the oldest and largest anarchist publishing house in Britain, with its roots in the continental anarchist emigre networks of the 1880s.

During the 1960s, Freedom became a source of intense conflict within the British anarchist movement. Vernon Richards, the owner and editor of the publishing house, was at the centre of the controversy. Following the garroting of two Spanish anarchists in 1963, Richards wrote a column which argued that Franco's tourist boom was beneficial for Spain's working class. This was completely at odds with the tourism boycott supported by the (largely) exiled Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), Spain's anarcho-syndicalist trade union.

Alongside Freedom, this collection also features copies of Direct Action, the paper of the Syndicalist Workers' Federation (the British contingent of the International Workers' Association). Contrary to the line taken by Richards, the SWF supported the CNT's boycott of Spanish tourism. It was during the peak of the anti-tourism campaign, in the summer of 1964, when Stuart Christie moved to Notting Hill in London, which at the time had become an important local hub for CNT exiles. During his stay in London, the anti-tourism campaign in Britain escalated to include forms of direct action – mostly breaking windows - against Spanish travel agencies.

Through the SWF, Stuart was introduced to anarchist brothers Bernardo and Salvador (‘Salva’) Gurucharri. Salvador had participated in various clandestine missions to Francoist Spain and had only recently arrived in London following his release from Fresnes prison in Paris. In 1963, during the founding conference of the Anarchist Federation of Britain, Stuart suggested to Salva that he would like to ‘play a direct part in the resistance movement’ and was told to be ‘ready to travel on twenty-four hours notice’.

Description
An account of the resource
After Stuart was acquitted by jury in the Angry Brigade trial, he made the decision, following a ‘tip off’ from a special branch officer, to leave London. In 1974, after a judicious period of exile in rural Yorkshire, Stuart and Brenda headed to Orkney, where their daughter, Branwen, was born. Here, with the help of Brenda, Meltzer and others, he set up the ‘Cienfuegos’ Publishing House, where he translated and published a number of elusive Spanish texts. Prisoner solidarity work with the Black Cross would also continue. By the mid-1970s, the Anarchist Black Cross and Cienfuegos Press had taken on a much broader internationalist remit, aiding political prisoners with parcels, letters and donations not only in Spain, but in France, West Germany, Italy, and Northern Ireland.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) was founded in the late 1950s by Bertrand Russell and J.B Priestly. While the initial group was formed by establishment intellectuals, the CND rapidly morphed into a cross-class movement. After Britain exploded its first megaton hydrogen bomb on Christmas Island in 1957, anti-nuclear groups gained hundreds and thousands of new members.

As a young teen, Stuart became involved in the anti-nuclear Committee of 100. A split from the ‘celebrity-and-politician dominated’ CND, the Committee of 100 mobilised against nuclear armament and militarism with direct action. Description
An account of the resource
Stuart Christie: 'Kirkwall, County Show Day, August 1979: We didn’t have a tent for ‘The Free-Winged Eagle’ (given the ever-present possibility of rain on show day) so we rang Territorial Army HQ in Inverness (who always had an army recruitment stand at the show) and told them we were an Orcadian 'self-help group' and could they help us out by lending us a tent. Not only did they kindly agree to provide us with a tent, they also erected it for us — right next to their marquee (see the TA flag). You can imagine their surprise — and embarrassment — when we turned up with anarchist flags, badges, records, magazines and of course anti-militarist and ‘Troops Out’ publications. Mind you, the OC handled it all very gracefully, but no doubt they learned to ask a few more questions in subsequent years. What larks, Pip.'

A name given to the resource
George Williamson, 'Scots Against War' (SAW) and Secretary of the Scottish Committee of 100.
Description
An account of the resource
"Another of the many 'events' organised by the Scottish Committee of 100 in July 1963 was a two-month march from Glasgow to London via Dunfermline on the Firth of Forth, carrying a 24-foot long cardboard model of a Polaris rocket, which had been made in Josh Macrae’s basement. It was an anti-nuclear re-run of the Jarrow March of the 1930s.
As a Glasgow police inspector drily observed to George Williamson, the organiser of the march, ‘Ah canny help but note that this march tae London is heading due north. Is therr somethin’ ahm missin’ here?’
Of the 35 people who started out, I believe only 5 completed the march all the way on foot, in early September. One of those was Bill Beveridge, but I can’t remember who the others were. George Williamson usually went ahead by bus (to organise accommodation and refreshments at the next stop; a feature of the trip, which was celebrated in a commemorative song at the time).
‘On the Glasgow march to London
There were 24 of us
Twenty-three were marching
And George was on the bus.’
Personally, I didn’t make it beyond Falkirk, the first night’s stop, as I had to be back at work on the Monday. Our arrival in the town had been heralded by the press, and among those waiting to meet us were the local female ‘beatniks’, with beehive hairdos, stiletto heels, pencil skirts and black PVC shortie coats.
On one occasion, in the autumn of 1963 I think it was, I went out to Hamilton to look for George for some reason to do with the 'Scots Against War'. George wasn’t at home; he had gone off to the Locarno dance hall that night in search of 'executive and cultural relief' from the organisational and emotional demands made on him by the Glasgow Committee of 100.
George’s mum, Annie, a rather douce and proper West of Scotland lady who did not entirely approve of George’s activities, invited me in for a cup of tea and a chat. Apparently I made such an impression on her — one so young going on so seriously about Spain and Franco — she said ‘Dae ye no’ think ye’d be better aff at the dancin’, son?’
George told me later that after the news broke of my arrest in Spain she gave a deep sigh and said: ‘Ah wish tae Gawd that wee boy hud taken ma advice and gawn tae the dancin’ an’ fun’ a nice wee girl instead!"
